The West Vancouver Seniors’ Centre “Social Club” invited Jennifer, from Hear At Home, to come and speak to our group about hearing loss. We all enjoyed the presentation – it was interesting and very informative. Jennifer is a wonderful source for all ages to become aware of the signs and symptoms of hearing loss, the protocol for good ‘hearing’ maintenance, and updated hearing aid advice . The best part was the complimentary ear check! Everyone was pleased to have Jennifer peek in their ears and offer a quick update on each person’s ear health. Thank you, Jennifer, for contributing to the well being of senior citizens in our community.
I was first introduced to Jennifer when a friend of hers, my neighbor, sent me an email about Hear at Home Mobile. I needed a vibrating alarm clock for my husband and the ease of having it dropped off at my house as opposed to me driving over town to get one, seemed like a good deal. We met again when I needed swim plugs for my son. I'm not sure at what point it was that she joined our cause, but during one of these visits we chatted and she learned about my son's disease and what we were doing about it.
When Jennifer heard about Trey's disease, she offered to help and do what she could to support our fundraising efforts to find a cure for Hunter Syndrome. Most people who offer to help do so with good intentions, but don't follow through. Volunteering takes time. Time that most people don't have or don't want to make time for. So, when Jennifer offered, I thanked her and let it go. But within a week I started getting emails from Jennifer's friends and colleagues, donating items to the auction of our 'Tacos for Trey' event. By the time Jennifer was done with us, her contacts had donated approximately 20-30 auction items for our event. And then more of her friends showed up for our community event. I was blown away.
The amazing thing about all of this is that Jennifer doesn't have time. She is a single mum with a business. What she has is a huge heart, which, while sitting here writing this, brings tears to my eyes. Jennifer is now helping us with our new effort called 'Once Upon a Cure', a Gala for Hunter Syndrome Research to be held September 24 at The Sutton Place Hotel. Jennifer is a wonderful human being who has not only supported our community in North Vancouver, but she has the enriched the lives of myself and those around her. Jennifer Abbott of Hear at Home came to a meeting at the White Cane Club to give an informal talk on the types of aids available to the hard of hearing. She spoke clearly and had the equipment so the blind members were able to feel the devices and some were able to listen to the discussion and experience less expensive options available.
An added advantage for seniors is she comes to your home.
